On 15 January 2026, an invitation-only online Climateurope2 workshop was hosted, on the topic of ‘Standardising Climate Services in Europe: A Dialogue with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services’ (NMHSs). The event was led by researchers from the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre with support from the World Meteorological Organization and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

It convened representatives from European and international NMHSs and key partner organisations to examine opportunities and challenges for standardisation in public climate service provision.

About the Workshop Report

This report summarises the key insights and recommendations that emerged from the discussions, to inform new standards to improve trust, comparability, and uptake of NMHS climate services.
The report highlights the unique position of NMHSs as public bodies developing and delivering services in varied geographical, political and cultural contexts. It emphasises that emerging European climate services standards must be inclusive, compatible with existing frameworks, and accompanied by implementation support to ensure their successful uptake.

Why This Matters

There is currently a clear gap in governance surrounding publicly-provided climate services in Europe. The lack of coherent standards poses a barrier to consistency, interoperability, and trust among users. Through the establishment of widely-adopted, clear requirements and guidelines, NMHSs can better serve diverse sectors, ranging from agriculture and energy to finance and insurance. It was agreed that standards are a promising tool for enhancing the usability of climate information and ensuring that service delivery meets the evolving needs of decision-makers.

Climateurope2 is looking forward to continuing to support international cooperation on climate services, building on the collaborative relationships between NMHSs and relevant partners established through this workshop.
