Summary

Health is one of the sectors most vulnerable to the impacts of climate variability and change. As awareness of climate-related health risks grows, so does the demand for tailored climate services that support timely and informed decision-making.

Climate services are tools and processes that provide timely climate information to inform decision-making across climate-sensitive sectors. While many are technologically advanced and science-based, they also require strong domain-specific, social and cultural understanding to identify knowledge needs, integrate diverse forms of knowledge and tailor context-specific solutions.

Climate services for health range from short-term solutions, such as early warning systems for heatwaves and infectious disease outbreaks, to long-term support for health infrastructure planning, vaccine distribution strategies, and public health policies that account for shifting disease patterns and extreme weather events.

Developing effective climate services for health demands meaningful user engagement, accessible delivery mechanisms, and responsiveness to users’ evolving needs. However, many aspects of the climate services landscape remain unstandardised. While technical guidelines for climate data exist, there are no widely accepted standards for service delivery, engagement processes, or usability—factors that are critical for building trust, ensuring uptake, and supporting quality assurance. The absence of such standards can compromise the legitimacy, effectiveness, and impact of climate services.

To address this gap, Climateurope2, a Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, is hosting an invitation-only, two-day stakeholder workshop. This event will bring together key actors from the climate, health, and humanitarian sectors to:

  • Share insights and practical experiences
  • Discuss current challenges and emerging opportunities at the climate-health interface
  • Contribute to ongoing standardisation efforts relevant to climate services for health
